Wedding Prayers
Prayer or Meditation
A
May the love which has brought you together continue to grow and enrich your lives, bringing peace and inspiration to each of you and to those who know you. May you meet with courage the problems which arise to challenge you; may your marriage be one of ever-growing depth, meaning, and perfection because of the sympathy, understanding, and love which you give to one another in the life you share. Amen.
B
Mother and Father of all creation, may your blessings continue for and
. May the warmth of their love melt the snows of all their barriers, and may they truly be united as one, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. May your living spirit encourage and help them to develop into more complete persons by becoming a more united couple. May your living spirit grant them patience to mend their differences, wisdom and guidance in all their decisions. May your living spirit grant them grace in times of disappointment and peace that comforts them all the days of their lives. We pray these things, believing in the power of everlasting love. Amen.
C
We pray for concord and creativity as well as for love and laughter in the life of and ; and when there is pain, may there be peace. We pray for joy that they will share with other people. May their home be a temple for that which is beautiful and good and true. As they share the richer experiences of life, so may their hearts and minds and souls be knit ever more closely together. Yet may their bonds of sympathy strengthen their separate personalities. We pray that they may have courage when the road is rough, and humility when fortune favors them. May they carry the past gratefully with them in all the years of their lives, and with an equal measure of hope ever face the future unafraid. Amen.
D
We invoke your gentlest blessings, O God, on all true lovers. We thank you for the revealing power of love which divines in the one beloved the mystic beauty and glory of humanity. We thank you for the transfiguring power of love which ripens and ennobles our nature, calling forth the hidden stores of tenderness and strength, and overcomes selfishness by the passion of self-surrender.
May the love of and be strong, that no misunderstanding loosen the bond and no passing of the years have power to dim the light that now glows in them. May they early gain wisdom to discern the true values of life, and may no circumstance take from them the wholesome peace and inward satisfaction which only love can give.
Grant them vision to look beyond this moment to the generations yet to come, and to know that the home they create will be part of the sacred body of humanity in which you dwell, that they may have reverence for others and for themselves and drink the cup of joy with awe. Amen.
E
God, make and channels of your peace:
That where there is hatred they may bring love;
Where there is hurt they may bring the spirit of forgiveness;
Where there is doubt they may bring faith;
Where there is despair they may bring hope;
Where there is darkness they may bring light;
Where there is sadness they may bring joy.
For it is in giving that they shall receive,
By losing that they shall find,
By forgiving that they shall be forgiven.
God, grant that they may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted,
To understand than to be understood,
To love than to be loved. Amen.
F
Out of this tangled world, O God, thou hast drawn together these two souls and bound them firmly with the swift sure bonds of love. Their destinies shall now be woven of one design and their perils and their joys shall not be known apart. As they increase in mutual understanding may their joy stand victoriously against the storm of circumstances which comes impartially to all our doors. From the rich encouragement of their affection may they complete the unfinished pattern of their true selves. They have chosen each other from the world’s multitudes. May the days and years, now veiled by time, deepen the joy of that choice and make it abidingly true. Amen.
G
Blessed are you, O God, creator of the universe. Grant that the love which unites this man and woman may grow in abiding happiness. May there be peace in their home, quietness and confidence in their hearts. May they be sustained by finding their place in the midst of all people, and by the hope of peace and justice for all people. Amen.
H
May we join together in prayer: Gracious God, giver and sustainer of life; in joy and gratitude for our many blessings we thank you for the gift of life itself, for all it holds of happiness and work and play and risk and courage and beauty, and for the infinite wonder of the human spirit. As we gather in your presence to witness the joining together of and in marriage—that spiritual bond in which one life is allied with another and wills the good of another as much as its own because the two are in union—help each of us to see again the union in our own lives, that our witness here may be a re-commitment to remain faithful to the inspiration of this hour.
We ask that you bless and with love that grows, and that they expect nothing from that love except the untold spiritual wealth that only love can give. Through their love may they bring the souls of one another out into the open, to be exposed to sunlight and to rain. May they remain accessible to one another as the earth is to the rain, as the face of the flower is to the sun. Through the power of love may they grow together into the full flower of faith—faith in people, in the earth and all its living, growing things, faith in the stars and the sky and all the galaxies of endless space. O God, the meaning of this union of two lives lies in the understanding that they belong to one another and to something wondrously great. Amen.

In the quiet of this very special moment we pause to give thanks for all the rich experiences of life that have brought and to this high point in their lives. We are especially grateful for the values which have flowed into them from those who have loved them and nurtured them and pointed them along life’s way. We are grateful that within them is the dream of a great love and the resources to use that love in creating a home that shall endure. We are grateful for the values which they have found by their own strivings. And now, as they make their promises to each other, may they make them with the deepest insight into their meaning and with their fullest sincerity. May this be but the beginning of a relationship that will grow and mature with each passing year until the latter days become even more wonderful than the first. Amen.

O God, you who are the author of all beauty, the source of all blessings, and the giver of all mercies; we gather here, a company of your children, sharing bright memories and united by a common devotion. We thank you for the trust and affection that have brought and _____ to this place to be joined together in covenant with each other and with you. We rejoice in the freedom of adventure, in the ardor of affection, and in the radiance of commitment which unite the beloved to the beloved. Be to them and to us the companion who lifts companionship into the light of your countenance. Be to them and to us the newness of life that transmutes each day into a pilgrimage of faith and hope and love. Amen.
K
We pray that this marriage of and may be the foundation of a home in which joy and sorrow may be shared. May it be a place of mutual support in bearing life’s failures and celebrating its successes. May each be a source of enrichment and growth for the other, and may their life together be a gift of caring concern for the larger community. Amen.

Eternal God, creator and preserver of humanity, giver of spiritual grace, author of everlasting life; send your blessing upon this man and this woman, whom we bless in your name. May they keep the vow and covenant here made between them, and may they ever remain in love and peace together, living in harmony with this universe of your creation. Amen.
